How to Connect a Light Switch and Outlet?

Turn off the circuit breaker and verify power is off with a tester

Remove the switch and outlet cover plates

Identify the incoming hot, neutral, and ground wires

Connect the ground wires to the green ground screw on the switch and outlet

Connect the neutral wire to the silver terminal on the outlet

Connect the hot feed wire to the brass terminal on the outlet or to the switch common terminal, depending on the circuit

Run a jumper from the always-hot feed to the switch common if the switch controls the outlet or a separate light

Connect the switched hot wire from the switch to the light load wire

Connect the outlet hot terminal to constant hot if the outlet should stay always on

Connect the outlet hot terminal to the switched hot if the outlet should be controlled by the switch

Tighten all terminal screws securely

Fold wires neatly into the box

Mount the switch and outlet into the electrical box

Install the cover plates

Turn the breaker back on

Test the switch and outlet operation
