Rest the ankle and avoid activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Wrap the ankle with an elastic bandage for compression
Keep the ankle elevated above heart level when possible
Use over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and safe for you
Limit weight-bearing and use crutches if walking is painful
Start gentle range-of-motion exercises after swelling and pain begin to improve
Gradually return to normal activity as strength and mobility recover
Wear supportive footwear or an ankle brace during recovery
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, swelling is extreme, or symptoms do not improve
