Do not lance a boil yourself
Apply warm, moist compresses for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times daily
Keep the area clean with soap and water
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage
Wash your hands before and after touching it
Do not squeeze, pop, or cut it
Seek medical care if it is large, very painful, on the face, spine, groin, or near the anus
Seek medical care if you have fever, spreading redness, red streaks, or worsening swelling
Seek medical care if it does not improve within a few days or keeps returning
Seek urgent care if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or multiple boils
Follow a clinician’s instructions if drainage is needed
Take any prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed
