How to Align Door Hinges?

Tighten all hinge screws on the door and frame

Replace any stripped screws with longer screws

Check that the hinge leaves sit flush against the door and jamb

Loosen the hinge screws slightly if adjustment is needed

Shift the door up, down, left, or right until the gaps are even

Insert thin cardboard, paper, or hinge shims behind the hinge leaf if needed

Remove material from the hinge mortise if the hinge is sitting too deep

Use longer screws in the top hinge to pull the door into alignment

Use a screwdriver to adjust the hinge pins if the hinges are adjustable

Test the door swing after each adjustment

Recheck latch alignment and make final screw tightening

Replace damaged or bent hinges if alignment cannot be corrected
