How to Do Nipple Stimulation for Labor?

Talk to your healthcare provider before trying nipple stimulation, especially if you are high-risk, have placenta previa, bleeding, a history of preterm labor, or any pregnancy complications

Use only if you are at or near full term and your provider says it is safe

Wash your hands before starting

Use your fingers, a breast pump, or a warm washcloth to gently stimulate one nipple at a time

Stimulate one nipple for about 5 minutes, then stop and wait about 10 to 15 minutes

Repeat on the other nipple, alternating sides

Continue only if contractions are mild and spaced out

Stop immediately if contractions become very strong, too frequent, or painful

Stop if you notice vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, decreased fetal movement, dizziness, or severe pain

Do not use continuous stimulation for long periods without breaks

Monitor contraction frequency if possible

Stop and contact your provider if contractions are less than 5 minutes apart, last longer than 60 seconds, or do not settle

Have another adult nearby if possible

Follow your provider’s instructions exactly if they gave you a specific method or time limit
