Ask, “Are you choking?”
Call emergency services if the person cannot breathe, cough, or speak
Stand behind the person
Wrap your arms around their waist
Make a fist with one hand
Place the thumb side of your fist above the navel and below the ribs
Grasp your fist with your other hand
Give quick inward and upward thrusts
Continue thrusts until the object comes out or the person becomes unconscious
Use chest thrusts instead for a pregnant person or someone you cannot reach around
If the person becomes unconscious, lower them to the floor
Call emergency services if not already done
Begin CPR
Check the mouth for a visible object before giving breaths
Do not perform abdominal thrusts on infants under 1 year old
For an infant, give 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts
Seek medical care after choking, even if the object comes out
