Wash your hands before treating the bite
Stop any bleeding with clean gauze or cloth and gentle pressure
Rinse the wound under running water for several minutes
Clean around the bite with mild soap and water
Apply an antiseptic if available
Cover the wound with a sterile bandage
Change the bandage daily or when it gets wet or dirty
Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or fever
Seek medical care promptly for deep wounds, puncture wounds, facial bites, hand bites, or heavy bleeding
Get medical attention if the bite was from an unknown or unvaccinated dog
Ask a doctor about tetanus and rabies vaccination
Keep the injured area elevated if possible
Avoid scratching or picking at the wound
Take pain relief only as directed by a healthcare professional
Seek emergency care if bleeding does not stop or the person has trouble breathing, severe pain, or signs of shock
