How to Get a Cut to Stop Bleeding?

Wash your hands if possible

Apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth or gauze

Keep pressure on continuously for 10 to 15 minutes

Raise the injured area above heart level if possible

Add more cloth or gauze if blood soaks through; do not remove the original layer

Use a bandage to hold pressure once bleeding slows

Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth to help reduce bleeding

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy, spurting, deep, or does not stop after 15 minutes

Get medical help if the cut is large, gaping, caused by a dirty or rusty object, or you cannot clean it properly

Call emergency services if bleeding is severe or the person feels faint, weak, or confused
