Wash the coconut
Find the three eyes on one end
Pierce one eye with a screwdriver, knife tip, or skewer
Drain the coconut water into a bowl
Wrap the coconut in a towel
Hold it securely on a hard surface
Tap around the middle seam with a hammer or the back of a heavy knife
Rotate and keep tapping until it cracks open
Pry the halves apart with a knife if needed
Remove the coconut meat with a spoon or knife
