Disconnect the capacitor from the circuit
Discharge the capacitor completely
Set the ohmmeter to a suitable resistance range
Connect the meter leads to the capacitor terminals
Observe the reading
A good capacitor will show low resistance briefly, then the resistance will rise toward infinity
Reverse the meter leads and repeat the test
A bad capacitor may show zero resistance, stay at a fixed low resistance, or never change
A shorted capacitor will read near zero ohms
An open capacitor will show infinite resistance immediately
If the reading is unstable or does not behave normally, replace the capacitor
