How to Meg a Motor?

De-energize and lock out/tag out the motor circuit

Verify absence of voltage

Disconnect the motor from the drive or wiring if required by the test procedure

Inspect the motor nameplate for insulation voltage rating

Select the correct megohmmeter test voltage

Set the megohmmeter to the appropriate voltage range

Connect one lead to the motor winding terminal

Connect the other lead to the motor frame or ground

Test each winding separately

Press and hold the test button for the required duration

Record the insulation resistance reading

Repeat the test for all winding-to-ground combinations

If testing phase-to-phase, connect leads between windings and record readings

Discharge the motor windings after each test

Compare readings to manufacturer or site acceptance criteria

Reconnect the motor only after the motor is fully discharged and safe to handle
