How to Test Electrical Outlet with Multimeter?

Set the multimeter to AC voltage

Insert the black probe into the COM port

Insert the red probe into the V port

Turn the multimeter on

Touch one probe to the hot slot and the other probe to the neutral slot

Read the voltage display

Repeat by touching one probe to the hot slot and the other probe to the ground slot

Compare the readings to the expected outlet voltage

Set the multimeter to continuity or resistance if checking grounding or outlet condition with power off

Turn off power at the breaker before continuity or resistance testing

Remove the outlet cover if needed

Test between ground and neutral with power off

Test between hot and neutral with power off only after confirming the circuit is de-energized

Replace the outlet if readings are abnormal or inconsistent
