Turn off the circuit breaker for the outlet circuit
Verify the power is off with a voltage tester
Remove the outlet cover plate
Unscrew and pull the outlet out of the electrical box
Inspect the existing wiring and note the wire colors and connections
Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the wire ends if needed
Connect the black or red hot wire to the brass screw
Connect the white neutral wire to the silver screw
Connect the bare or green ground wire to the green screw
Tighten all terminal screws securely
If using back-wire or back-stab terminals, follow the outlet’s instructions
Fold the wires neatly into the electrical box
Mount the outlet back into the box with the screws
Install the cover plate
Turn the breaker back on
Test the outlet with a plug-in tester or lamp
