Wash the string beans
Trim the ends
Cut into smaller pieces if desired
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil
Add the string beans
Boil for 3 to 5 minutes until tender-crisp
Drain the beans
Heat butter or oil in a pan
Add garlic, salt, and pepper if desired
Add the drained beans
Toss for 1 to 2 minutes
Serve hot
