Use an over-the-counter lice treatment shampoo or lotion labeled for head lice (follow package directions exactly)
Comb wet hair with a metal lice comb to remove lice and nits
Repeat the lice treatment as directed on the product label (commonly 7–10 days)
Check everyone in the household and treat close contacts if lice are found
Wash recently used bedding, towels, hats, and clothing in hot water and dry on high heat
Soak combs, brushes, and hair accessories in hot water (at least 130°F/54°C) for 5–10 minutes
Seal items that can’t be washed in a plastic bag for 2 weeks
Vacuum floors and upholstered furniture, especially where the person with lice sat or slept
Avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, helmets, and hair accessories
Treat only with products approved for lice; avoid using gasoline, kerosene, or other unsafe substances
If live lice persist after proper treatment and combing, contact a healthcare provider or pharmacist for an alternative prescription option
Continue daily nit checks and combing until no live lice are found for several days
