Stop forcing the finger straight
Relax the hand and keep the wrist neutral
Gently massage the palm at the base of the affected finger
Warm the hand with warm water or a warm compress
Slowly straighten the finger using the other hand if it can move without sharp pain
Slowly bend and straighten the finger a few times within a comfortable range
Rest the hand and avoid gripping or repetitive finger use
Use a splint if one has been recommended by a clinician
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if safe for you to use
Seek urgent medical care if the finger is locked, very painful, swollen, red, or numb
