How To Stop Acid Reflux?

Eat smaller meals

Avoid eating within 2–3 hours of bedtime

Identify and limit trigger foods (spicy foods, fatty foods, chocolate, peppermint, caffeine, alcohol, citrus, tomato-based foods, carbonated drinks)

Reduce or stop smoking

Maintain a healthy weight

Avoid tight belts or waistbands

Sleep with the head of the bed elevated 6–8 inches (use blocks or a wedge pillow)

Use left-side sleeping if it helps

Chew sugar-free gum after meals

Wear loose clothing around the abdomen

Stay hydrated and avoid large volumes of fluid with meals

Consider antacids for occasional symptoms

Consider H2 blockers (famotidine) for recurring symptoms

Consider proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, esomeprazole, etc.) for frequent symptoms as directed

Review medications with a clinician if symptoms persist (some can worsen reflux)

Seek medical care urgently for chest pain, trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, unexplained weight loss, anemia, or persistent vomiting

Make an appointment if symptoms occur more than twice a week or do not improve after 2–4 weeks of appropriate treatment
