Melt 1/2 cup unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat
Add 3 to 4 minced garlic cloves and cook for 30 seconds
Pour in 2 cups heavy cream and stir well
Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring often
Reduce heat to low
Add 1 1/2 to 2 cups grated Parmesan cheese gradually
Stir until the cheese melts and the sauce is smooth
Season with salt and black pepper to taste
Add a pinch of nutmeg if desired
Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes until slightly thickened
Serve immediately over pasta
