Rest and sleep as much as possible
Drink plenty of fluids (water, tea, broth)
Use saline nasal spray or saline rinse
Use a humidifier or take steamy showers
Gargle warm salt water for sore throat
Honey (1–2 teaspoons) for cough (avoid for children under 1 year)
Use OTC pain/fever reducers: acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Use OTC decongestants if appropriate (follow label; avoid if you have certain conditions)
Use OTC antihistamines for runny nose/sneezing if appropriate
Use OTC cough suppressants or expectorants as directed
Consider lozenges for throat relief
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
Avoid alcohol and heavy exertion
Eat light, nutritious foods; don’t force food
Wash hands often; avoid close contact to reduce spread
Seek urgent care if: trouble breathing, chest pain, severe dehydration, confusion, bluish lips, or symptoms rapidly worsening
Seek medical advice if: high fever lasts more than 3 days, symptoms last more than 10 days, severe sinus pain, ear pain, or worsening after initial improvement
Consider testing for COVID-19 or flu if you have fever, body aches, or known exposure (especially early)
