How to Become a CNM?

Earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an equivalent nursing degree

Pass the NCLEX-RN exam and become a licensed registered nurse

Gain clinical experience as an RN, preferably in women’s health, labor and delivery, or related areas

Enroll in an accredited nurse-midwifery graduate program

Complete a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a nurse-midwifery focus

Complete required clinical training in midwifery

Graduate from the accredited program

Apply for national certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB)

Pass the CNM certification exam

Obtain state licensure as a Certified Nurse-Midwife

Maintain certification and licensure through continuing education and renewal requirements
