How to Put IV in?

Wash hands and wear gloves

Gather IV catheter, tourniquet, antiseptic, sterile gauze, tape or dressing, saline flush, and IV tubing

Verify the order and patient identity

Explain the procedure and position the patient comfortably

Select an appropriate vein

Apply the tourniquet above the site

Clean the site with antiseptic and let it dry

Stabilize the vein and insert the catheter bevel up at a shallow angle

Watch for blood return

Advance the catheter slightly, then thread the catheter into the vein

Release the tourniquet

Remove the needle

Attach the extension set or IV tubing

Flush the line to confirm patency

Secure the IV with dressing and tape

Dispose of sharps properly

Monitor the site for swelling, pain, redness, or leakage
