Choose the mantel style and material
Gather lumber, fasteners, adhesive, level, saw, drill, tape measure, and stud finder
Turn off power to nearby outlets if needed
Locate and mark wall studs
Cut the mantel pieces to size
Assemble the mantel frame or shelf
Sand all surfaces smooth
Apply stain, paint, or finish
Mark the mounting height on the wall
Install a mounting cleat or support bracket into studs
Attach the mantel to the cleat or bracket
Check for level and secure fit
Fill holes and touch up the finish
Allow all adhesives and finishes to cure before use
