Wash your hands before touching the wound
Rinse the road rash gently with clean running water
Remove visible dirt or debris with clean tweezers if needed
Use mild soap around the area, avoiding scrubbing the wound
Pat the area dry with a clean cloth or sterile gauze
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly
Cover with a non-stick sterile bandage or dressing
Change the dressing daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty
Keep the wound clean and moist, not dry and crusted
Avoid picking at scabs or peeling skin
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and safe for you
Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or fever
Seek medical care if the wound is deep, large, bleeding heavily, or has embedded debris
Seek medical care if you cannot remove dirt, the pain worsens, or movement is limited
Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date
Avoid sun exposure on the healing area
Protect the area from friction and further injury
