Keep the child calm
Use cool night air for a few minutes if breathing is noisy
Use a cool-mist humidifier
Give fluids often
Keep the child upright
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever or discomfort if age-appropriate
Seek urgent medical care if breathing is hard, lips look blue, drooling occurs, or the child cannot speak or drink
Call a doctor if symptoms are severe, last more than a few days, or keep returning
Follow a clinician’s advice; prescription steroids are often used to treat croup
