Keep the child calm and comforted
Use cool mist or humidified air if available
Take the child into cool night air briefly if breathing seems worse
Offer frequent small sips of fluids
Keep the child upright
Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever or discomfort if age-appropriate and directed by a clinician
Avoid over-the-counter cough and cold medicines unless a doctor says to use them
Seek urgent medical care if there is stridor at rest, trouble breathing, blue lips, drooling, inability to swallow, severe lethargy, or worsening symptoms
Call a doctor if symptoms are moderate, last more than a few days, or the child is younger than 6 months
Follow a clinician’s advice for steroid treatment such as dexamethasone if prescribed
Use emergency services if the child is struggling to breathe or becomes unresponsive
