Give the child acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed on the label for age and weight
Use a warm compress on the painful ear for 10 to 15 minutes
Keep the child upright or slightly elevated
Encourage small sips of fluids
Keep the ear dry
Do not put anything into the ear
Do not use ear drops unless a doctor says it is safe
Check for fever, ear drainage, swelling, or worsening pain
Seek urgent medical care if the child is under 6 months old
Seek medical care if pain is severe, there is hearing loss, or symptoms last more than 1 to 2 days
