Soak the affected foot or finger in warm water for 15–20 minutes, 3–4 times daily
Add Epsom salt to the soak if desired
Dry the area thoroughly after soaking
Gently lift the nail edge with clean cotton or dental floss if it is not too painful
Change the cotton or floss daily
Wear roomy shoes or open-toe footwear
Avoid tight socks and pressure on the toe
Trim nails straight across, not rounded
Avoid cutting nails too short
Keep the area clean and dry
Use over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
Apply antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Seek medical care if there is pus, severe pain, spreading redness, fever, or no improvement
See a doctor for recurring or severe ingrown nails
Do not cut into the nail corner yourself
Do not try to dig out the nail if the skin is infected or very swollen
