Choose a ripe pineapple with a healthy green crown
Twist or cut off the top, removing any fruit flesh
Peel away the lower leaves from the crown to expose the stem
Let the crown dry for 2 to 5 days
Place the crown in water or directly in well-draining soil
If using water, keep only the stem base submerged
Change the water every few days
If planting in soil, use a pot with drainage holes
Use a sandy, well-draining potting mix
Plant the crown so the exposed stem is covered and leaves stay above soil
Water lightly after planting
Keep in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight
Maintain slightly moist soil, not soggy
Wait for roots to develop over several weeks
Transplant to a larger pot or garden spot after rooting
Fertilize lightly during the growing season
Protect from cold temperatures
Expect fruiting to take 18 to 36 months
