Turn off power to the HVAC system at the thermostat and breaker
Verify power is off with a multimeter
Remove the access panel on the outdoor condenser unit
Take a photo of the existing capacitor wiring
Discharge the old capacitor safely using an insulated resistor or have a qualified technician do it
Note the capacitor’s microfarad rating and voltage rating
Purchase an exact replacement capacitor with matching specifications
Label and disconnect the wires from the old capacitor one at a time
Remove the old capacitor from its mounting bracket or strap
Install the new capacitor in the same position
Reconnect each wire to the correct terminal exactly as before
Ensure all terminals are tight and secure
Reinstall the access panel
Restore power at the breaker and thermostat
Test the system to confirm the fan and compressor start properly
Call a licensed HVAC technician if you are unsure or uncomfortable working with electrical components
