Park both vehicles close enough for the cables to reach, but do not let them touch
Put both vehicles in park or neutral and set the parking brakes
Turn off both ignitions, lights, and accessories
Open both hoods and locate the batteries
Identify the positive terminal marked with a plus sign or red cover
Identify the negative terminal marked with a minus sign or black cover
Connect one red clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal
Connect the other red clamp to the good battery’s positive terminal
Connect one black clamp to the good battery’s negative terminal
Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal ground on the dead car away from the battery
Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes
Try starting the dead vehicle
If it starts, keep both vehicles running
Remove the cables in reverse order
Let the jumped vehicle run for at least 15 to 20 minutes
If the vehicle does not start, wait a few minutes and try again
If it still does not start, stop and check the battery and cable connections
