How to Properly Jump a Car?

Park both vehicles close enough for the jumper cables to reach, but do not let them touch

Turn off both vehicles and remove the keys

Put both vehicles in park or neutral and set the parking brakes

Open both hoods and locate the batteries

Inspect both batteries for cracks, leaks, or damage; do not jump a damaged battery

Identify the positive terminal marked with a plus sign and the negative terminal marked with a minus sign

Connect one red clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal

Connect the other red clamp to the good battery’s positive terminal

Connect one black clamp to the good battery’s negative terminal

Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal ground on the dead car, away from the battery

Make sure the clamps are secure and not touching each other or moving parts

Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes

Try starting the dead vehicle

If the dead vehicle does not start, wait a few more minutes and try again

Once the dead vehicle starts, keep both vehicles running

Remove the cables in the reverse order of connection

Keep the revived vehicle running for at least 15 to 30 minutes

Drive the revived vehicle to help recharge the battery

Replace the battery if it repeatedly needs a jump

Wear eye protection and avoid smoking or open flames near the battery
