Check your blood sugar right away if you can
If blood sugar is very high and you have ketone strips, check for ketones
Drink water or sugar-free fluids
Take your prescribed diabetes medicine exactly as directed
Take your prescribed rapid-acting insulin correction dose if your doctor has given you one
Recheck blood sugar in 15 to 30 minutes if using insulin or after following your care plan
Do not exercise if you have ketones, vomiting, severe illness, or very high blood sugar
Avoid sugary drinks, juice, candy, and high-carbohydrate foods
Rest and stay calm
If you have symptoms of low blood sugar after treatment, treat low blood sugar immediately
Call emergency services now if you have confusion, trouble breathing, vomiting, severe weakness, chest pain, seizures, or cannot keep fluids down
Get urgent medical help if blood sugar stays very high, ketones are positive, or you are unsure what to do
Follow your diabetes emergency plan if you have one
