Apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated
Avoid rubbing or touching the eye
Remove contact lenses if you wear them
Use artificial tears if the eye feels irritated
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if swelling is from allergies
Avoid makeup and eye creams until the swelling improves
Rinse the eye with clean water or saline if an irritant got in it
Get enough rest and sleep
Reduce salt intake if swelling is worse in the morning
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, vision changes, fever, injury, pus, or swelling that does not improve
