Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs mostly clear
Add rice to a pot
Add water
Use a ratio of 1 part rice to 2 parts water for white rice
Use a ratio of 1 part rice to 2.5 parts water for brown rice
Add a pinch of salt if desired
Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat
Reduce the heat to low
Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid
Simmer until the water is absorbed
Cook white rice for about 15 to 20 minutes
Cook brown rice for about 35 to 45 minutes
Turn off the heat
Let the rice sit covered for 5 to 10 minutes
Fluff the rice with a fork
Serve the rice
