Rinse 1 cup basmati rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear
Soak the rice in water for 20 to 30 minutes, then drain
Add 1.5 cups water, 1 cup rice, and 1/2 teaspoon salt to a saucepan
Bring to a boil over medium-high heat
Reduce heat to low and cover with a tight-fitting lid
Simmer for 12 to 15 minutes without lifting the lid
Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 5 to 10 minutes
Fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving
