Put on gloves if available
Place the plunger over the toilet drain opening
Make sure the plunger forms a tight seal
Push down gently at first to remove air
Pump the plunger up and down firmly several times
Keep the seal intact while plunging
Lift the plunger to check if the water drains
Repeat plunging as needed
Stop if the water rises too high
Turn off the toilet water supply if it is close to overflowing
Flush only after the clog clears and the water level is normal
Clean the plunger and surrounding area after use
