How to Propagate Figs?

Take hardwood cuttings in late winter or early spring

Select healthy, dormant branches about 6 to 8 inches long

Cut just below a node using clean, sharp tools

Remove lower leaves if present

Dip the cut end in rooting hormone if desired

Plant the cutting in a moist, well-draining rooting medium

Keep the cutting warm and evenly moist

Place in bright, indirect light

Wait for roots and new growth to develop

Transplant rooted cuttings into pots or the ground

Propagate by air layering on a healthy branch

Wound the branch, apply rooting medium, and wrap it securely

Keep the wrapped section moist until roots form

Cut below the rooted section and plant it

Propagate by suckers or root shoots if the tree produces them

Dig up a rooted sucker carefully and replant it

Propagate by seed only if growing for experimentation or breeding

Clean and dry seeds from ripe figs

Sow seeds in a sterile, moist medium

Keep seeds warm and lightly covered

Transplant seedlings after they are established
