Blot up as much urine as possible with paper towels or a clean cloth
Press firmly and repeat with fresh towels until the area is mostly dry
Rinse the spot with cool water and blot again
Apply an enzyme cleaner made for pet urine
Follow the product instructions and let it sit for the full recommended time
Blot up any excess cleaner with a clean cloth
Repeat the enzyme treatment if the smell remains
Sprinkle baking soda over the dry area
Let the baking soda sit for several hours or overnight
Vacuum the baking soda thoroughly
Use a wet-dry vacuum if available to remove moisture and residue
Clean the carpet padding if the urine soaked through
Wash or replace any removable carpet pad or rug backing if needed
Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners
Avoid steam cleaning before the odor is fully removed
Air out the room with fans and open windows
Re-treat the area if the smell returns after drying
Test any cleaner on a small hidden area first
