Rinse with cool or lukewarm water
Stop brushing immediately if it triggers sharp pain
Use gentle, slow brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush
Apply a fluoride desensitizing toothpaste (leave on teeth for 1–2 minutes, then spit)
Use a desensitizing gel or mouthguard product containing potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride
Apply a small amount of OTC desensitizing gel directly to the sensitive area
Avoid hot, cold, sweet, acidic, and very spicy foods and drinks for 24–48 hours
Avoid carbonated drinks and citrus juices
Use a straw for cold drinks to reduce exposure
Chew on the opposite side of the sensitive teeth
Avoid whitening products and high-acid mouthwashes
If pain is immediate and you need relief, take an OTC pain reliever as directed (ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
If you grind or clench, wear a night guard if available or avoid hard foods until you can see a dentist
If you have a cracked tooth, loose filling, or gum recession, do not use the tooth and arrange urgent dental care
