Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time
Rinse gently with warm salt water several times a day
Keep the area clean by brushing and flossing carefully
Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or very hot foods
Chew on the opposite side of your mouth
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Use an oral numbing gel if appropriate and directed by the label
Sleep with your head elevated
See a dentist if the pain is severe, persistent, or worsening
Get urgent dental care if you have swelling, fever, pus, or trouble opening your mouth or swallowing
