How To Test A Starter Solenoid?

Ensure the vehicle is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set

Check the battery voltage with a multimeter

Inspect battery terminals and starter wiring for corrosion or looseness

Locate the starter solenoid

Turn the key to the start position and listen for a click

Test for battery voltage at the solenoid input terminal

Test for voltage at the solenoid output terminal while cranking

Check for voltage at the small trigger terminal when the key is turned to start

Bridge the solenoid terminals with an insulated tool to see if the starter engages

Perform a continuity test across the solenoid terminals

Perform a resistance test on the solenoid coil

Verify the starter motor operates when the solenoid is bypassed

Replace the solenoid if it fails voltage, continuity, or engagement tests
