Use a warm compress on the affected ear for 10–15 minutes at a time
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Keep the ear dry
Rest and drink plenty of fluids
Sleep with your head elevated
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if a doctor or pharmacist says they are safe for your type of ear problem
Avoid putting cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects into the ear
Avoid swimming until the infection clears
Seek medical care if symptoms are severe, last more than 2–3 days, or include fever, drainage, hearing loss, or worsening pain
