Remove the smoke alarm only if you are replacing it with a working, code-compliant unit
Turn off power at the circuit breaker for hardwired alarms
Remove the battery from battery-powered alarms
Disconnect the alarm from its mounting bracket
Replace the unit with a new smoke alarm immediately
If the alarm is part of a monitored fire system, contact the building manager or alarm company
If the alarm is malfunctioning, replace it rather than disabling it
