Twist the smoke alarm counterclockwise to remove it from the mounting bracket
Open the battery compartment
Remove the battery cover or slide out the battery drawer
Disconnect the battery from the connector if it is a hardwired model with a backup battery
Pull the battery out of the compartment
Replace the battery with a new one if needed
Close the battery compartment
Reattach the alarm to the mounting bracket
Twist the alarm clockwise until it locks in place
Press the test button to confirm proper operation
