Remove any damaged outer cabbage leaves
Rinse the cabbage under cold water
Cut the cabbage into wedges or shred it
Remove the core if needed
Fill a pot with 1 to 2 inches of water
Place a steamer basket in the pot
Bring the water to a boil
Add the cabbage to the steamer basket
Cover the pot with a lid
Steam until tender, about 5 to 10 minutes for shredded cabbage or 8 to 12 minutes for wedges
Check tenderness with a fork
Remove the cabbage from the steamer
Season with salt, pepper, butter, or other desired seasonings
