Open the Messages app
Open the conversation you want to change
Tap the contact name or group name at the top
Tap Info if shown
Change the wallpaper or background using the available options
Choose a preset background or photo if your iPhone version supports it
Tap Set or Done to save the change
If no background option appears, update iOS or use a third-party messaging app that supports chat backgrounds
