Rinse the asparagus under cold running water
Pat dry with a clean towel
Hold each spear near both ends and bend until it snaps
Trim off the woody ends with a knife if needed
Peel the lower stalks if they are thick
Remove any tough or damaged spots
Use the spears whole or cut them to the desired length
