Check that the clams are alive before cooking; discard any that are cracked or stay open when tapped
Scrub the shells under cold running water
Cook the clams until the shells open
Discard any clams that do not open after cooking
Let them cool slightly before eating
Use your fingers or a small fork to remove the clam meat from the shell
Dip the clam meat in melted butter, broth, lemon juice, or sauce if desired
Eat the clam meat in one bite or in small bites
Remove any tough or sandy parts before swallowing
Discard the shells as you go
Wash your hands after eating
