How to Put in a Tampon for the First Time?

Wash your hands

Read the tampon package instructions

Choose the smallest absorbency you can use comfortably

Get into a relaxed position, such as sitting on the toilet or standing with one foot raised

Unwrap the tampon

Hold the tampon at the grip area

Separate the labia with your free hand

Aim the tampon toward your lower back, not straight up

Gently insert the tip into the vaginal opening

Push it in until your fingers touch your body

If using an applicator, push the inner tube with your index finger until the tampon is fully inside

If using a non-applicator tampon, use your finger to place it comfortably inside

Leave the string hanging outside the body

If it feels uncomfortable, remove it and try again with a new tampon

Change the tampon every 4 to 8 hours

Never leave a tampon in for more than 8 hours

Remove it by gently pulling the string

Wash your hands after removal

Seek medical help if you cannot remove it, have severe pain, or develop fever, rash, or unusual discharge
