Unplug the washer
Turn off the water supply
Open the washer lid
Remove the fabric softener dispenser or agitator cap, if present
Locate the center bolt or bolt cover on top of the agitator
Pry off the bolt cover, if needed
Use the correct socket or wrench to remove the center bolt
Lift the agitator straight up and out of the tub
If the agitator is stuck, rock it gently side to side while pulling upward
Remove any retaining washer or spacer, if present
Inspect the agitator shaft and parts before reassembly
